Kegs and Eggs BABY!

What to do…an English style Pub on st Patrick’s Day?  Well, we open for a pre-parade breakfast.  Where else would you rather be on that Saturday (the 17th of March) than holding a pint and all you can eat eggs and bacon?

You read this right: Bacon and eggs…mountains of it…all you can eat from 10am to noon.

Here is the deal: $17 to get in on the festivities.  You get 2 pints of cold beer and all you can eat bacon and eggs.

Then at Noon just walk down to the Parade and let your drinkin’ day continue.  We will open up again at 4pm so come on back down.

We like to do things different here at The Scotland Yard Pub.  We try lots of different things.  Opening for Kegs and Eggs could be the start of a new Rochester tradition.  See you there.

They Need a “J”

Ryan

Quiz
Schedule

Wednesday Night at Scotland Yard 8 pm

I think we might have to start calling Geeks Who Drink at Scotland Yard Pub
the Fuck Mountain Open.  In the 5 weeks we have been at Scotland Yard Fuck
Mountain has managed to win 3 times, and that includes missing a week.  Despite
a weak start that left that in the middle of the pack, they still managed to
rally for a victory in perhaps our ugliest quiz so far.  I can safely say after
looking at these scores that no one is cheating. As much as I enjoy seeing Fuck
Mountain, I’m getting sick of writing about them.

Our first round of the
quiz was themed J is is for Judgement Day, which was a round of questions where
all of the answers began with the letter J.  Some of these I though were pretty
difficult, but I still find it odd that when asked to name a country that start
with J, more people wrote Jamaica than Japan.  Perhaps some of the players in
the crowd were thinking about something else that starts with a J.

Our
2nd round was an audio round that quite frankly didn’t go very well. Our 2nd
place finisher on the night was Rehab Tomorrow, and they somehow managed to nail
it.  Clearly nostalgic music is a forte of their’s, since they even did better
than Fuck Mountain.  However they came up 2 points short in our slopfest.  Let’s
see if they can take it down next week.

I finally had the “fortune” of
doing a say when round in a very packed bar.  I was reading off clues that
described a cartoon.  This was my first experience with really having a drunken
crowd on my hands.  The Ass Grabbers (who I thought should have been named Happy
Hour Heroes) decided to be assholes and yell stop after one clue:  Mike Judge.
Maybe they forgot they he did write more than one show, but either way Karma
came back to bite them, and they finished in last.  However they were really
good sport, and fun to banter with.

So what happens when you add
Santorum, a round about frothy things, a question involving a bathroom cleaner,
and a quizmaster who has a less than politcally correct sense of humor.  If you
answered an apology in my blog, then you were correct.  Our other team that
stayed from Happy Hour, Pimp Daddy, decided they would get even and write jokes
about me being a redhead whenever they didn’t know an answer. I actually like
it, as I wouldn’t dish it if I couldn’t take it.  I wish they had gotten a
little more creative than “fire crotch” but talking to one of the ladies
afterwards it was all in good fun.  The same can not be said for another patron,
and I apologize for the misunderstanding.   Chicken Liquor Good had a damn near
perfect score in this round, and they needed every point as they finished tied
for 3rd with Surly Puzzles.  It seems to be the regular teams fare better than
our first timers, so don’t be discouraged if you fail the first time.  Come back
and try again.

Perhaps the entire field got lucky that the girls from
Fuster Clucks were tardy in their arrival.  They finished only a few points away
from the top, despite missing the 1st round.  You know woman though.  When they
get excited about something, everything has to be perfect.  Groundhog Day Part 1
was back in attendance, and managed to rise to the middle of the pack.  Let’s
see if they can crack the prize pool next week.

I’d like to thank our new
teams for coming out and joining the fun.  The Dudes, Judy’s Butlers, Reppin
Science, and Awesome all were a part of our biggest night at Scotland Yard yet.
12 teams, and they all stuck it out the whole way through.  Terry and Nancy are
clearly doing a great job in making people aware of the quiz, and John and Jen
are doing a great job keeping us full of food and booze while they’re
playing.

I was happy to hear from someone that they became aware of Geeks
at Scotland Yard from reading my blog.  I was starting to get worried I was
writing for the blind, because I hadn’t been getting much feedback.  Apparently
my headlines and style of writing make the experience enticing, and I took it as
quite the compliment.  I usually write these in a drunken haze, or through one
blood shot eye at work, so it makes me wonder how good I really could be at
writing.

Anyways next week might want to get to Scotland Yard Pub a
little early.  It’s Singles Day and they are having quite the interesting
gathering from 5-7.  It’s a lock and key party. Guys will be given a pair of
handcuffs, girls will be given keys.  Guys will walk around locking onto girls,
and girls will unlock them if they don’t like them.  I figure this will offer me
a unique opportunity to get rejected by girls, as opposed to the open hand slap
to the face or having a drink thrown at me.

If you don’t make it for
that, we will start at 8 on the dot, so get there and beat Fuck Mountain!

Team Pub Quiz Week 4: Fuck Mountain are 2 timers

Ryan

Business as usual at Scotland Yard Pub for Geeks Who Drink.  In our 4th week
running we crowned our first two time Champion, Fuck Mountain.  First prize this
time around were two tickets to see comedian Brian Regan.  If Terry and Nancy are
going to keep giving out amazing prizes like tickets to see the biggest acts
coming to town,  I might start getting compelled to bring a team of ringers.
I’m starting to wonder if even having a team that has seen the quiz before would
still stand a chance against Fuck Mountain.  Whenever I’m unsure if I did a good
job explaining a category, they will validate my efforts by getting a perfect
score.  This time around they answered 4 rounds perfect, which put them 13
points ahead of the field.  However I’m thinking these guys are getting sick of
splitting prizes for two, and next week might break up and form into a few other
teams.  This way we can see who really carries the weight for this
team.

As for the rest of the bunch, it was the tightest game I have had
to score since I began working as a QuizMaster.  2nd place and 7th place were
seperared by a mere 6 points.  Perhaps if some of these teams were able to
recognize Will Smith singing the Theme from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the
scoreboard would have looked a little bit different.

Our 2nd place
finisher and winners of a $25 gift card was a new team:  Burleton, Chargasm, and
the Spoonbenders.  The first round was a good indicator of how the night was
going to go as these guys were able to take down 7 questions on stuff from the
year 2002, however Fuck Mountain was perfect (you will start to detect a
pattern).  A strong showing, and hopefully a new regular team to add to the
bunch.

After 4 weeks the guys from Digitronik were finally able to crack
the top 3, and earn something other than free beer.  Of course I think these
guys would have preferred the booze over $10 to Show World (a sex store) but I
guess it will force them to be creative.  Another commonly missed question was
in our visual round, where many people confused a Madonna movie poster for a
Jennifer Lopez.  That could have forced a tie for 2nd place, as Digitronik
finished 1 point behind.

Finishing just outside the prize pool we had a
group of 4 teams seperated by 2 points.  Chicken Liquor Good (always good
advice) were able to edge both Unrequited Wanderlust and Sandusky’s Hair Club
for Boys by a single point.  Unrequited Wanderlust were the defending champions
and missed their chance to become the first two time champion at Scotland Yard
Pub.  Sandusky’s really shined in our audio rounds, but fell a little short in
some of the other categories.  It’s kinda funny knowing what Sandusky was up to
in 2002, and that these guys didn’t have much of a clue what happened in
2002.

Surly Puzzles were in 7th and accused me of some bad math, but I
explained to them that Microsoft Excel does all the dirty work, I just enter the
numbers.  Don’t blame me, blame yourselves, or maybe that Bill Gates
guy.

3 new teams finished out leaderboard.  Hopefully we see some more of
Rehab Tomorrow, Groundhog Day Take 1, and Awesome took some lumps their first
time out. Let’s hope this doesn’t discourage them from becoming regulars. It
seems like we are stuck around the 10 team mark.

Feeling like it was
unfair and annoying that all I do is ask questions, I told the group that anyone
who could come up with a Seinfeld trivia question that I couldn’t answer would
be rewarded in some way.  Nice try Wanderlust, but you need to do better than
that.

Another new wrinkle was I asked all of the teams to guess the
winning team of the Super Bowl, and the total points of the big game.   The team
that is the closest to the exact score and winner, is going to receive a prize
to be named later.  Let’s see how these guys see the big game playing
out.

Groundhog Day Take 1-Giants 59 points
Digitronik- Giants 37
points
Unrequited Wanderlust- Giants 17 points
Fuck Mountain- Patriots 45
points
Sandusky- Giants 49 points
Surly Puzzles- Patriots 41
points
Rehab Tomorrow- Patriots 49 points
Awesome- Patriots 47
points
Chargasm and etc.- Patriots 51 points
Chicken Liquor Good- Patriots
56 points

Looks like our crowd was pretty split on the big game.  Me, I’m
going to have to agree with Fuck Mountain, since they pretty much get everythig
right.

We’ll see who the winner ends up being, and I look forward to
seeing everyone again next Wednesday.  I’d like to thank the staff at Scotland
Yard for making me feel like I’m important since I pretty much didn’t have to
lift a finger the entire night.  I’m not sure if Terry is aware, but people like
him around supposed to bring me drinks, it’s supposed to be the other way
around.

If Fuck Mountain splits up, and all of these teams show up again
next week, we could be in for another exicitng quiz next Wednesday.  I hope to
see everyone back!

Bar Trivia, in Rochester, the first night.

I don’t even know where to begin.  What a night it was for Geeks Who Drink at Scotland Yard Pub.  9 teams is a good way to kick things off at our newest venue.  I’m looking forward to hosting there every Wednesday Night.  I’m also looking forward to see if anyone will come to beat Fuck Mountain.  Fuck Mountain dominated a night of questions with topics ranging from the UK to music in Tarantino movies.  Congratulations on winning two tickets to Jersey Boys, but good luck figuring out how to divide it by 6.

Tonight was pretty much a battle for 2nd place after Fuck Mountain used a joker on a perfect audio round, successfully recognizing the title and artist of familiar songs in both German and Cantonese.  Hearing a Johnny Cash song in German I was able to confirm that not only are German people not that funny, they can’t sing either.  I was unsure if people understood our round where I would use a terrible description of a sitcom, and expect the person to guess the correct show.  Apparently I did a good enough job because Fuck Mountain was able to post a perfect score in that round as well.2nd place went to My Couch Pulls Out but I don’t (true story), edging out Digitronik by 8 points.  Our bartender John was pulling double duty by taking care of the bar and assisting Digitronik.  Scotland Yardigans were the closest competition after 6 rounds, but just like the Red Sex they fell apart down the stretch.

S&A was able to hold of Dutch Oven Fired Pizza for 5th.  Despite Dutch Oven Fired Pizza’s best efforts to deter me from eating with that name, I was unable to resist.  It was a good thing, because right now the only thing keeping me going to write this are the couple of slices I brought home.  Still can’t decide whether it tastes better out of the oven or out of the fridge.  Either way they make a pretty good pizza at Scotland Yard.

Rounding out the field, Asshat’s were a little hesitant to join becase they didn’t plan on staying long.  We made it worth their time since they managed to win two free drinks for being the first to answer our bonus question twice.  Not From Around Here left after 3 rounds and held their ground while they were playing.  The one man team Auction Direct made a late appearance and was able to snag a free drink for himself.  If you want to buy a car, look them up.

I had met earlier in the week with Terry and Nancy from Scotland Yard and came away with a good first impression of the location.  After the night we had tonight I’m starting to have some very high expecations.  Our first night drew 9 teams.  Let’s go for double digits next week, butI’m thinking we should be able to have 20 in no time.  Might be a lot for our bartender John and our server Jen to handle, but I’m sure they will embrace the challenge.

I’d like to thank the staff at Scotland yard for really helpis promote the quiz.  Thanks to all those who showed up and played.  Spread the word!  Last I want to thank Chis for showing the ropes.  Hopefully in a few weeks I’m going mad writing a blong for 40 times like Chris has experienced at Tavern in the Square.

In the future I will look to make the blog for this venue a little more entertaining in my mixing it with a little more humor.  However, this quizmaster is coasting on fumes I must call it a night.

See you all next week!

Team Trivia in Rochester

I didn’t know if I would be into doing trivia at Scotland Yard Pub.  Many had suggested that the city was calling for a good team trivia night but I just wasn’t convinced.  Then a national company out of Denver, Geeks Who Drink, came to see us one night and we started talking about bringing their formula for bar trivia to Rochester.

I was impressed with the company and how they approached doing trivia and their success around the country.  It is trivia with an attitude!

I don’t like doing anything that is ordinary, like so many other bars do.  So when I talked to Geeks Who Drink I immediately realized that this is not your typical bar trivia: “ask a question, play a tune, ask a question, play a tune…”

These guys do two hours of edgy trivia, nonstop, keeping the audience enthralled and excited for the entire time.   Sports trivia, TV trivia, history trivia, everything will come at you so your team needs to be well rounded in the knowledge department.

We start with Team Trivia on January 11th, Wednesday night, 8 to 10pm.

I can promise you one thing; this will take trivia to the next level in Rochester and you will want to be part of the ride.

Come out and enjoy it starting Wednesday night, January 11th, 8pm start.  We hope you will be part of something new to Rochester.  Geeks Who Drink Team Trivia!

A Thanksgiving to Remember

We took a chance and opened on Thanksgiving night.  Nancy and I always wondered why everyone closes on that night.  I know it’s a holiday and all but those without kids to get to bed surely would go out for a night cap if they had a comfortable place to go.  We called it the “After Nap Party”

Oh, there were “nay sayers” to be sure but we have been working so hard to find new and fun reasons for people to enjoy our Pub we opened anyway.  Guess what?  It was a great night.  We had lots of people: regulars, friends and family for sure.  We also saw lots of new faces too.  We didn’t open the kitchen. Who would be looking for food after gorging themselves all day right?  So we put out snacks of all kinds and opened the place ourselves.  Lean and mean.

The Pub was full of people, all in a great holiday mood and most not working the next day.  Add in the Ravens – 49ers game for added measure and it looks like we started a Thanksgiving night tradition.

One group of four, watching the game, mentioned that they had a horrible experience at a restaurant for their Thanksgiving dinner.  So we fired up the grill and Sam made some awesome turkey and stuffing sandwiches for them.  That’s the cool part of this business, being able to give people instant gratification…in this case, providing a good meal when they needed it.  They were very happy and very gracious.  Here is the review they left on Yelp:

“I decided to go out on Thanksgiving night and ended up at Scotland Yard Pub. A friend I was with wanted to watch the football game and it was one of the few bars open in the city that night. It was my first visit and I was very impressed by the size of the bar.   I loved the ambiance of the place in general- beautiful woodwork, large screen for the game, ample seating, and plenty of space so that we didn’t feel crowded.

We had a miserable Thanksgiving day after a bad meal at a local restaurant and were actually planning to order food. A friend had highly recommended the dragon wings and told us to try the pizza. The waitress/bartender (Sandra) came to our table to check on us and said they were not serving food. They did have a huge assortment of snacks out, and she graciously brought some over. We told her about our horrible meal earlier that day and she worked her magic to bring us some turkey sandwiches. I can honestly say that the staff and owners that night saved our Thanksgiving from being one of the worst on record. I was actually impressed that the owners cared enough about their business to be there on a holiday…they certainly made our day! I will definitely be back to try the wings and pizza soon.”

Thank you so much Tanya and friends for the kind words.  It was a pleasure helping to make your Thanksgiving a great holiday.

You didn’t outgrow the Pizza Party

It’s an age old tradition, the pizza party.  We had them as kids for birthdays and such.  We then perfected them in college as a supplement to kicking a keg of beer and a way to meet girls from across the way.  But as adults, the pizza party has lost its luster, it just does not seem to be a regular part of our grown up lives.

Until now.

The Scotland Yard Pub has brought the pizza party back into fashion, gourmet style.  As you know our wood fire brick oven produces some of the best and most unique pizzas in Rochester, NY.  Just this month we added many new selections like the Scotland Yard PLATE Pizza.  And yes, it is as good as it sounds.  This unique tasty twist on the age old ritual of the “pizza party” has been keeping us pretty busy as of late.

Office parties, holiday parties, birthday parties, bridal showers, whatever the occasion the new, grown up version of the pizza party will make your gathering perfect.

So next time you drop your kids off at their friends house for a pizza party, or you volunteer to bring a sheet pizza to your kids school event, remember: YOU have not outgrown the pizza party…it has grown up too.  Gourmet style.

The Restaurant Business?

The Scotland Yard Pub is more than a bar, more than the Pub that we call ourselves.  It’s a restaurant.  There I said it.  I never wanted to be in the restaurant business, the bar business sure, but the restaurant business?  Well…here I am…and I love it.

At first when people hear we have pizza they think maybe we are a pizzeria of sorts.  Well that’s not a restaurant really right? But when you try our wood fired gourmet pizzas you will know we are different.  The Democrat and Chronicle said “The real draw here is the wood-fired pizza. During our visit we devoured the Scotland Yard Pizza, a white pizza with goat cheese, artichoke hearts and prosciutto.” It is one of the favorites but there are many more to choose from.  With a review like that, you know we are not a pizzeria, we are a restaurant. :)
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Dragon Wings.  City Newspaper said “Scotland Yard is also somewhat famous for its wings, and justifiably so. Sam Paniccia developed his own sauce for wings that adds both sweet soy sauce and paper-thin garlic slices to the traditional hot-sauce-and-butter recipe.”  I love when people try them for the first time.  They are always a hit.

And with all that said, we are not a pizza n wing joint by most peoples definition.  The Strip Steak Sandwich is amazing and we always have a delicious pasta dish or two on the menu.  You can check out the whole menu here.
For not wanting to get into the restaurant business, the food at The Scotland Yard Pub has changed my mind.  I love the restaurant business.  I hope you enjoy our restaurant as well.

A Word About our Neighbors

Did I make you nervous?  This is a positive entry about some very good parts of the area.

Since I have become a neighbor in the Saint Paul Quarter here in downtown Rochester, NY I have had many discussions about the neighborhood our restaurant resides in.

It is a truly historic neighborhood.  Built during the Industrial Revolution of the late 1800s, they often served as workspaces with tall ceilings and massive beams designed to accommodate heavy machinery. The St. Paul Quarter includes one of the last intact city blocks of such buildings.

Our neighbors are legendary in Rochester nightlife.  Tapas 177 is right next door to us.  Great friends and partners in making Saint Paul a great place to go.  Up around the corner is Abilene.  Danny Deutsch’s place has the best jukebox in Rochester and great live music.  It is a gem downtown.  Water Street Music Hall is historic in our city’s music community.  John Chmiel and his staff are great partners to have in the neighborhood and supportive of making the Saint Paul Quarter a better place.  Pane Vino is one of the unique spots for fine dining that the city has to offer.

These are our neighbors in the Saint Paul Quarter that make it a vibrant and unique part of Rochester.  At any given time you will find the staff’s of these places enjoying another neighbor’s bar and food menu, sometimes even pitching in and taking a shift when needed to help out a neighbor.

There is valet parking most nights, and plenty of parking on Bittner and paid lots as well.  Or if you want us to suggest a car service or taxi, we know this best.

Come meet me and my neighbors on Saint Paul Rd.  Visit their websites here:
